I've tried to boot the notebook with an SD card plugged in but no luck. It was able to work out of the box with every device in my laptop (Sony VGN-G21VN) apart from the Ricoh R5C843 SD Card Reader.

I just installed Ubuntu 12.04 and lovin' it.
